Internship Projects

We want our interns’ projects to fall into one of two broad categories:

1. Working directly with one of the members of GCP (James, Emma, Henry, Harry)

Interns have the options of directly shadowing a team member of GCP and working for them on the projects they are working on. ‘ We expect this to be an exciting opportunity for anyone wanting to work extremely closely with one of our team members, and/or someone enthusiastic about GCP’s core projects. For example, an intern working closely with Harry might have as their main focus collaborating on organising and running pre-orientation retreats for US uni groups.

2. Working on a team managed by a member of GCP on a summer project.

Interns working on a summer project will work on their own team trying to improve and innovate on GCP’s existing projects. At the moment, we have two concrete possibilities in mind (but are open to considering other projects so long as they align with GCP’s projects):

  1. Improvements to the GCP Library, such as turning it into an interactive online course, producing video content for key pieces, adding new sections and sequences of readings.
  2. Improvements to the GCP Student Group Handbook, such as drafting new workshops, talks, and discussion groups.

Structure

Where: Berkely, Constellation offices.

When: Interns can choose to start either in Berkley from the start of July, or in Oxford from the start of June and transfer with us to Berkley, or and they end on September 9th at the latest.

Management: Interns working directly with a member of GCP will be managed 1-1. Interns working as part of a team will be managed with team meetings with a member of GCP. All interns will receive management of one of these forms.

Logistics: We provide all necessary travel, food, accommodation, and office space for our interns.

Learning: Our internship has a strong focus on our interns’ learning object-level EA knowledge as well as strategies for building effective altruism. We set aside one day per week of work time to allow interns to self-directedly learn more about EA topics relevant to them.

Social community: We put a strong emphasis on building connections during the GCP internship. GCP Interns will live together, have meals together (in groups and 1-1s), and we expect that interns will find great value in organising their own learning, networking, and social activities with the other interns as well as with other people in the GCP/Berkley network. Our current plan for office space would place us in Constellation, a shared office space in Berkeley for people working on long-termist projects. People from the following organizations often work from the space: MIRI, Redwood Research, Open Philanthropy, Lightcone Infrastructure, Paul Christiano’s Alignment Research Center, and interns can expect to be able to casually talk to executive members of these organisations over lunch, such as Claire Zabel, Buck Schlegeris, etc.
